I went to the National Museum of Indonesia located in Jakarta yesterday. It was a wonderful experience. I saw textiles from various ethnic groups from different islands within Indonesia and wonderful very old statutes.
I have so many ideas from my visit. My first selection of photographs is of barkcloth textiles – the colours and the texture was great. Interestingly bark cloth differs between island groups in terms of its fine texture to rough texture.I really liked the patterns and can see them informing free form embroidery in the future.
How to make Bark Paper – if only it was this easy!!
This has given me more ideas in terms of the papers that I stitched for Assignment 2 – taking it further with imitation bark cloth and a piece of real bark cloth that I obtained.
Cannot wait to work on drawings and samples in my Work Book.
